WORKSHOP ANNOUNCEMENT:
When it comes to maintaining and rebuilding Steenbeck editors the most critical element in short supply is experience which we have 45 years of. To address this shortage of talent worldwide we are offering intensive workshops starting in November of 2026. Based out of our facility in Cape Cod we plan to offer service minded people responsible for maintaining their own Steenbecks a 1 week “general maintenance course” or a 2-week course that includes “full Steenbeck restoration” as well.
If you are interested please let us know so we can send you a questionnaire asking about your abilities, responsibilities and interest in either 16 or 35mm machines. This will allow us to group you accordingly. We also will take into consideration any other factors such as your country or region. I would like to group people inclined to mutually support each other after the training. We will keep you informed of the content to be covered, and any changes in accommodations, costs, options and schedule as they become available.
RETIREMENT ANNOUNCEMENT:
As of January 2025: The state of affairs has become clear when it comes to Steenbeck repair, parts, and service, The Boston Connection Inc appears to be the only full service company left in the world. We don’t say that to boast but we’ve learned recently the other major company (Steenbeck BV) which supported Steenbecks out of Amsterdam was auctioned off in December of 2024. They had been sold about 5 years previously to a German company named MWA. In short MWA was not interested in servicing Steenbeck Flatbed editing machines made over the last 50 yrs and auctioned off the remaining assets at the Amsterdam location. A collaboration of Archivists and an anonymous third party attended the auction snapping up what they could at a bargain. We have yet to discuss with them their intentions but hope to soon. It appears no one has taken a position like we have by stockpiling used replacement parts, fabricating new ones, designing new direct replacement electronics and offering field service repair. This gives our inventory of parts a real value and purpose.
In addition to loosing the support of the “Steenbeck factory” sadly most other independent service people across the UK and Australia have retired or died. Folks are in a panic and concerned about these recent losses and what the future for Steenbecks will be. I am also looking ahead to retirement and announced my (2029) retirement well in advance. Unfortunately there is no one following in my footsteps to pass the company onto.
